THE CROSS OF PEACE
Created from the “ashes of war,” this installation, which represents Ukraine in the world of high art, transcends national and religious boundaries. A Sculpture with a Thousand Voices

Every inch of the Cross of Peace is dense with meaning. It is a polyphonic work that speaks to individual grief and collective memory:

  • The Vertical and Horizontal Beams: Created from salvaged pipes pulled from the rubble of Ukrainian homes in Kharkiv and Odesa, these elements testify to the civilians who lived and died beneath them. They are not simply structural; they are sacred vessels of remembrance.
  • The Gold-Covered Savior: Standing atop an embedded artillery shell—representing evil—this radiant Christ shines with both literal and metaphorical light. The blood-red enamel wound at his side evokes divine suffering, while his golden form speaks of eternity.
  • The Four Ends of the Cross: Symbolizing the unity of Christianity’s major branches—Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Protestantism—this sculptural innovation defies the Great Schism of 1054. In an age of bitter division, Melnikoff proposes reconciliation not through theology, but through art.
  • Tram Rails and Anti-Tank Obstacles: Supporting the entire sculpture are tram rails forged in 1946, later salvaged from a missile-struck depot in Kharkiv. Their transformation into a spiritual foundation reflects the unbroken will of a nation under siege.
  • Symbolic Elements: A rushnyk—a ritual towel in Ukrainian tradition—hangs from the crossbeam, linking the living with the dead. A bronze bell bears the Latin phrase, “Vocem Meam Audit Qui Me Tangit”—”Whoever touches me will hear my voice.” Steps of howitzer shells name the cities erased by war: Mariupol, Bucha, Bakhmut, Maryinka. And from a split artillery shell, a crystal scarlet rose rises—a poignant image of fragile beauty reborn from brutality.
  • The Spear of Longinus: Crafted from bomb fragments, this spear gleams with gold and nickel, surrounded by 106 candle-like flames. Its inclusion completes the transformation of the tools of war into sacred relics of peace.

“For the Love of Humanity” vs. “For the Love of God”

In discussions of the sculpture, comparisons have inevitably emerged with Damien Hirst’s infamous For the Love of God—a platinum skull encrusted with 8,601 diamonds and priced at $100 million. While Hirst’s skull grapples with mortality through the lens of opulence and spectacle, Melnikoff’s Cross of Peace addresses it through transcendence and sacrifice. Where Hirst glorifies the glittering inevitability of death, Melnikoff elevates the dignity of those who resist it. As The Ukrainian Review aptly puts it, Hirst’s work is for individual contemplation; Melnikoff’s is for collective salvation. The contrast is more than aesthetic—it is philosophical. For the Love of Humanity is not just the sculpture’s subtitle, but its central ethic. It is a call to serve, not to dazzle.

A collage features Pope Francis, former head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City, alongside Sergey Melnikoff, the author of the Cross of Peace installation with the Golden Crucifix, set against the backdrop of the artwork.

In response to an appeal from the Board of Trustees of the Soul of Ukraine, an International Charitable Foundation, regarding the majestic sculpture The Cross of Peace—created for the first time since the Great Schism of 1054 in the traditions of Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodoxy—Pope Francis called on all Christians to celebrate Easter on the same day, regardless of denomination.

The Cross of Peace by Sergey Melnikoff

A Global Symbol of Harmony and Unity

By William Beischel

Author’s Note:
This article is based on materials from The Ukrainian Review, direct statements by Ukrainian art critics and cultural figures, and the visual-symbolic language embedded in Sergey Melnikoff’s sculpture. The Cross of Peace stands as a profound example of how art can respond to violence—not with despair, but with redemption.

In the Heart of a War-Torn Nation, a Monumental Sculpture Rises—Not as a Monument to Victory, but as a Plea for Peace.

Standing four meters tall and nearly a ton in weight, the Cross of Peace is unlike any crucifixion ever created. Its gilded figure of Christ does not hang in agony, but radiates serenity. His body, fashioned from 20,000 shards of war—fragments of artillery shells and exploded bombs—gleams with 999.9 pure gold. His gaze is not mournful but calm, confident in the ultimate triumph of good over evil. This is not merely religious iconography. It is a spiritual manifesto forged in the fire of modern conflict.

The man behind this extraordinary work is Sergey Melnikoff, an American photographer and artist of Ukrainian origin, known in the art world by his initials, MFF. Working in collaboration with Ukrainian metallurgist Viktor Bielchyk, Melnikoff has turned the detritus of war into a visionary installation that blends history, symbolism, and defiance.

“Each element of this sculpture tells a story,” says Melnikoff, standing beside the gleaming cross during a rare moment of quiet in Ukraine. “This is art as witness. Art as prayer. Art as resistance.”

A Sacred Anatomy of Destruction

At first glance, The Cross of Peace is breathtaking. But look closer, and its components begin to speak. The vertical and horizontal beams of the cross are salvaged pipes from residential buildings in Kharkiv and Odesa—buildings leveled in missile strikes, homes where entire families once lived and died. Each pipe has been preserved in its damaged state, a reminder that destruction cannot erase memory.

Supporting the sculpture is a stylized anti-tank obstacle constructed from 1946 tram rails—rescued from a Kharkiv depot bombed by Russian forces. These rails, forged in the legendary Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, evoke Ukraine’s industrial past and the indomitable spirit of its present.

Beneath the golden figure of Christ lies an unexploded artillery shell, its warhead embedded like a foundation of evil beneath His feet. To Melnikoff, it is the axis of humanity’s darkest instinct—subjugated, but never forgotten.

“We wanted the cross to contain real war within it,” Bielchyk explains. “So we used it, quite literally.”

— What a kind and peaceful face!
This is the best Jesus I have ever seen. He embodies the confidence in the victory of good over evil, and his image brings joy and happiness.

I admire this image. It combines kindness, peace, wisdom, and bliss. Its message is to do good and never look back. This is truly genius!
Usually, Jesus’ face reflects suffering, but that is only the depiction of pain. In this face, there is majesty, serenity, strength of spirit, and the infinity of life.
I am in awe.

Reclaiming Faith Amid Ruin

More than a symbol of suffering, Melnikoff’s Christ radiates poise and timelessness. His loincloth is a woven Ukrainian rushnyk—a ceremonial towel that traditionally binds the living to the dead. Draped across the crossbeam is a weathered bronze bell etched with an image of the Virgin Mary and a Latin phrase: Vocem Meam Audit Qui Me Tangit — “Whoever touches me will hear my voice.”

This is where the sculpture’s message deepens. Every corner of The Cross of Peace intertwines art with theology, spirituality with statehood. It deliberately unites the three main branches of Christianity—Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Protestantism—across the four termini of the cross. In doing so, Melnikoff critiques the 1,000-year-old division of Christendom known as the Great Schism.

“This is not a religious work,” Melnikoff insists, “but a human one.”

Perhaps the most haunting detail lies at the foot of the sculpture: a rusted artillery shell cracked open to reveal a scarlet glass rose on a golden stem, stretching toward the feet of Christ. It’s a vision of fragile hope rooted in the soil of devastation.

Art That Walks Through War

The sculpture’s journey across Ukraine in 2025 was nothing short of a miracle. Displayed in city squares and churches under threat of air raid sirens and missile attacks, the Cross of Peace became not only a cultural event but a national vigil. In a time of destruction, this sculpture became a mobile sanctuary.

In the village of Pidhirtsi, at the Basilian Monastery of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, The Cross of Peace will receive its final blessing. On February 14, 2025, Reverend Father Porfiry will consecrate the piece inside the Church of the Annunciation, an act that echoes centuries of religious tradition—and spiritual renewal.

“My people are still suffering,” says Academician Mykhailo Saliuta, one of Ukraine’s leading cultural scholars. “But this sculpture is a sign that the end of suffering is possible. It reminds us that faith is not abstract—it’s forged in action.”

For the Love of Humanity

In a 2007 artistic statement, British conceptual artist Damien Hirst unveiled For the Love of God—a platinum skull encrusted with over 8,000 diamonds. It was beautiful, provocative, and sold for $100 million. Critics called it a meditation on mortality. Others saw vanity in sparkle.

Melnikoff offers a reply, not with words, but with his sculpture’s subtitle: For the Love of Humanity.

Where Hirst fixated on individual death and glamour, Melnikoff turns to collective trauma—and resurrection. His sculpture is not for private collectors. It is not locked behind museum glass. It is touched by ordinary people in battered towns. It rings with the sound of bells and is lit by the flicker of 106 candles arranged around the symbolic Spear of Longinus, whose golden point gleams with redemption, not violence.

A Living Legacy

The Cross of Peace is not static. It evolves with the memory of those who encounter it. People weep at its base, touch the bell, leave flowers at the scarlet rose. In a century of drone warfare, disappearing villages, and displaced nations, this sculpture challenges us to confront suffering with transcendence.

It is a crucifix not bound by any one creed or culture. It is made from the same metal that took lives, now forged into a vessel for healing.

And as it travels through Ukraine—and soon, perhaps, beyond—it carries with it a single message:

Even in war, we can choose peace.

A Word from the Art Historian

By Dr. Miroslav Vantuch

The sculptural composition Cross of Peace with its Golden Crucifix stands as one of the most significant and symbolically profound works of contemporary art. It embodies the eternal struggle between good and evil, life and death, and, most importantly, the unity of humankind in the pursuit of peace. Through bold artistic vision and exceptional craftsmanship, Sergey Melnikoff has created a work destined to become part of the cultural heritage not only of Ukraine but of the global community.

In an era when armed conflicts continue to devastate lives, the Cross of Peace serves as a powerful reminder that faith and art can act as catalysts for healing and reconciliation.

Undoubtedly, given its historical resonance within the Christian world and its profound symbolic weight, the Cross of Peace is poised to be recognized alongside the greatest masterpieces of the Renaissance.

Equally significant is the fact that all proceeds from the sale of the sculpture will be directed to charitable causes, rendering this project not only a symbol of hope but also a tangible contribution to the future of Ukraine and the broader global community.

A powerful presentation of the 'Cross of Peace' installation in Ukraine, set against the backdrop of ongoing Russian bombings — Captured by Mariia Universaliuk

In the first half of 2025, the monumental sculptural composition Cross of Peace, crowned with a Golden Crucifix, was solemnly displayed across Ukraine. For the first time in the history of world art, a work of such scale—nearly a ton in weight—was exhibited publicly amidst a brutal war, under the constant threat of Russian aerial and missile assaults. This act became not only a cultural milestone, but a profound symbol of spiritual resilience and national defiance.

— Before you lies a unique photo report — a confession in images. These are vivid, piercing testimonies of how pain can become a prayer, and tears — a silent cry to the heavens.
Maria Universaluk has captured more than just Ukrainian women. She has captured their souls. They do not ask for wealth, do not dream of peace, do not await happiness.
They pray. Not for themselves, but for those now walking the razor’s edge between life and death.
Their husbands, sons, fathers, grandsons… They are there, on the front lines — in the hell of war, where every morning could be the last. And the mothers, wives, and sisters stand beside the "Cross of Peace," holding onto it as their last hope.
"Save and protect…" — these trembling words rest on their lips, caught in parched throats.
They gaze upward, but see only a gray sky — the sky into which their prayers have dissolved.
And if you still have tears left — look into these eyes.
And allow your soul to weep.
