About the Artist
Sergey Melnikoff (MFF)
Sergey Melnikoff, known as MFF, is an American artist of Ukrainian origin whose work stands at the intersection of art, history, and moral testimony.
A former Soviet dissident and political prisoner, he escaped the USSR with his family and was granted political asylum under a United Nations resolution after exposing evidence of medical experiments conducted in Stalin-era forced labour camps.
Over more than five decades, Melnikoff has worked across all continents, creating large-scale photographic and conceptual projects and engaging with world cultural and spiritual leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis, and Dalai Lama.
In 2014, together with Ukrainian academician Borys Paton, he founded the international charitable foundation The Soul of Ukraine, uniting artistic practice with humanitarian mission.
Today, working from within wartime Ukraine, Melnikoff has developed the Ashes of War technique — transforming fragments of destroyed weapons into sculptural forms of spiritual and cultural significance.
His work is not only an artistic practice, but an act of witness.
With Ilia II, Patriarch of Georgia. Tbilisi, 2008.

Melnikoff’s work has been presented in the presence of leading spiritual, cultural, and public figures.
Among those who have engaged with his work are Dalai Lama, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis, and Queen Elizabeth II.
His works have been accepted as official and personal gifts at the highest international level, reflecting their cultural and symbolic significance.
A Life Beyond the Studio
Melnikoff’s life extends beyond traditional artistic practice.
He has participated in high-altitude expeditions, conducted underwater explorations, and worked in extreme environments across the globe. His experience includes Himalayan climbs, deep-sea expeditions, and preparation for spaceflight missions.
This direct engagement with the physical limits of the world informs a body of work shaped not by observation alone, but by lived experience.

Ashes of War
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Melnikoff’s work has undergone a profound transformation.
Working under conditions of ongoing missile attacks and prolonged blackouts in his workshop in Odesa, Ukraine, he began creating sculptures from fragments of artillery shells, mines, and destroyed infrastructure collected from Ukrainian battlefields.
This body of work, known as Ashes of War, transforms material once used for destruction into objects of spiritual, cultural, and historical meaning.
The Soul of Ukraine
In 2014, Melnikoff founded The Soul of Ukraine, an international charitable foundation dedicated to cultural, humanitarian, and educational initiatives.
The Foundation serves as the institutional framework through which his artistic work is presented, preserved, and directed toward philanthropic impact.

Closing Reflection
His work, created under bombardment and in conditions of war, transforms the material of destruction into a language of memory, faith, and resistance.
